Morena - Vodka

Vodka

Malta 2008 Eurovision Song

(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)
(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey)

The hunt is still on
Here in Gorky Park
I’m in a danger zone
Everywhere is pitch dark

I’m running away
To a blanket of snow
Spy One to Spy Four
I’ve deciphered the code, yeah…

Vodka – that’s the secret word
Vodka – and they want it so bad
Vodka – I’ve deciphered the code
Got a rush in the head
Vodka – a transparent word

(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)
(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey)

Cold blood drums within
They breathe down my neck
Spy One to Spy Four
We just have to connect

Their footsteps are near
Closing in for the kill
My pulse has gone dead
With a heart-racing chill, yeah…

Vodka – that’s the secret word
Vodka – and they want it so bad, so bad, so bad
Vodka – I’ve deciphered the code
Got a rush in the head, yeah…
Vodka – a transparent word…

(Vodka – that’s the secret word)
(Na zdarovye!) Yeah…
(Vodka – and they want it so bad) So bad, yeah
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)

Vodka, yeah… (That’s the secret word)
(Na zdarovye!)
Vodka – a transparent word
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)

*Na zdarovye! = Russian for cheers

These are by far the worst lyrics I have ever read in my life. They are completely horrible, disgusting even.
No wonder Malta loses all the time.
What kind of a retard wrote rubbish like this? Worse yet, what kind of a retard sings rubbish like this? Even worse, what retards vote for this to represent their country?

Hi Morena, You got beauty you got style, you are outgoing and full of confidence.you are typically Gozitan and pure Maltese. And on stage you impressed me you got the heart of all by going down near the public.Enjoy your success while keeping your feet down to earth. Your song will make us proud with your presence. this message is to admin

admin…in my message i was addressing the ppl over here who ridiculated the winner, especially the person being maltese and not liking the song in his own country. i am very surprised why lots of maltese ppl, criticize other maltese. it’s a shame, we must be proud that we have a small country with lots to offer. i congratulate morena once again, and i really wish she does well because she deserves, she seems to be down to earth and im sure she is very capable. make us proud morena !!!!
those who criticize, in my opinion they are just jealous.
Come on , how can u hate the lyrics and say they are ridiculious????
Have you any knowledge in music???
Or are you a person who just criticizes, mikielsammut why dont you show us your talent??

    Posted February 7, 2008 at 4:09 pm | Permalink

I think that it is not stupid to criticise, after all we live in a democracy and what one like another does not. It is criticism that has made big countries better. Malta has always suffered because we are afraid ‘mill-kritika tal-gara’!!!

Morena did a good job. But anyone who listens to music can also say that the lyrics are crap. I mean where is the story apart from the singer saying she is being followed in gorgi park by spies!

Also apart from that no one understands anything apart from spy one to spy four!!!!! And by the way Morena it is not difficult to understand the lyrics as you said on tv. You said it is difficult to explain to people ‘difficult words like gorgi park’. Maybe you do not listen to music but if you remember a provincial group from Germany called Scorpions had a song once called ‘Wind of Change’ and they do happen to mention gorgi park. So people do know some difficult words!!

    Hi to all,

I don’t really understand in music, and out there are loads of people like me, who judge the song by just hearing the beat and the rhythm of the song! But like everyone else I’ve got my opinion and honestly I thought that Caravaggio dissevered representing Malta.
I don’t like nothing about the song vodka, I believe it’s worthless…but I hope that I’m all wrong as the singer morena it’s great! She’s young, She’ got talent., voice, style and attitude, full of energy and she’s confident which is good once she’s on stage performing…
How ever I think that no matter how great the song is, it depends on how it goes that night!! Which by all means I wish all the good luck and best wishes to morena! Be yourself and don’t let anyone influence you! As Maltese, we’re all after you…so go girl and have fun + enjoy every bit of it! And if it goes wrong don’t take it personal…as they say better luck next time  xxx

I am proud to say that I am Maltese when abroad… but when it comes to the Eurovision I feel ashamed to be Maltese because of our lack of vocabulary in the lyrics, for example, two years ago, in ‘I DO’ 60% of the lyrics where the title itself. Last year, in ‘Vertigo’ again, the word vertigo was repeated an abundant number of times, but at least in those two songs you could understand most of the words. When it comes to this year with the song ‘Vodka’ not only the lyics where very poor, repeating the title over and over again but with Morena’s singing no- one could understand any other word but ‘Vodka’… Now I am not only being negative, but I am being realistic…
Anyway Good luck Morena, we are not hoping for high expectations so no one will be disappointed if you do not succeed, just try to work on your pronunciation so maybe we will pass to the semi- finals… fingers crossed…

Hey guys, come on. Most of you are putting ill omened comments!
    Such a waste of time!
Most of you are MALTESE and are telling other countries not to vote for your own country!!!!!!!!!
Right now MORENA is Malta and her song, you guys have to support her & when you’re supporting her you’re supporting her song, MEANING YOUR COUNTRY. If you don’t like the song and you don’t like her just SHUT UP!!!!
And you ‘Maltija’ you’re kidding us trying to tell us that you’re ‘proud to be Maltese’…. next time write in your own language stop showing us how much you hate your country!!!!!!!!!
other countries with very much worse songs support their singers (LIKE IRELAND, that’s a song with lack of vocab) meaning their country.
I like your country’s song Malta, and ‘Maltija’ I understood the words. I think you should go and wash your ears. I really wish I was just Maltese not partly and know the language don’t give me a wrong idea.
I guess Malta will win finally and if it happens ‘IN YOUR FACE YOU PEOPLE WITH ILL OMENED COMMENTS’!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cool video-actually coolest, great singer-stunning, and you’ve got
GO MORENA GO VODKA GO MALTA great composers!!!

LONG LIVE VODKA — the secret word ;D.
I really love this song and anyone ready to say it is rubbish is a pure ignorant. Why did last year’s song win, Mikiel Sammut? It won because of a show but a crappy song. this time, Malta has a great show with an amazing song and an outstanding singer. VIVA MALTA :D

This year I am not in Malta to witness the Maltese European Fever … And I am not missing it at all.

As usual we will take te whole thing so seriously and think Malta is going to win … Then we place badly and we blame the may the thing is voted for … So why take it seriously in the first place.

Froman objective point of view (as I am not residing in the island at the moment), I agree with MikielSammut completely ! This song is complete rubbish - Possibliu ma kellkomx ahjar minn xiex taghzlu ghax kwazi ghar minn ta Faniello din!

I am from Russia and I didn`t like this song at all. The lyrics are total terrible. But I think the russian audience will give many points for this trash because of the phrase in Russian “На здоровье (Na zdarovye)” and of the great importance which this drink has in our country. :)

In my opinion this song has a catchy tune which should help us regain our position amongst the top Eurovision Song Contest partecipants. I do not agree with all those who are critisizing the song and the singer. We obviously take the contest too much at heart but is because we really care about our country so let usunite once more and back Morena & Vodka. Having listened to some other competitor’s songs I think Morena should pass the semi-final hurdle and place amongst the top 10, but then it is up to the other countries to decide. Pity that a Maltese living abroad decided not to vote. How patriotic !!!

I’m ‘lolling’ at all the people jumping on the SUPPORT-OUR-MALTESE-PRODUCT-BANDWAGON. No kids, if something is terrible, it’s just plain terrible regardless of whether it’s Made in Malta, China or the US of A. I will not support anything that makes AN ASS out of my country. I’ve opted out of supporting Malta’s chosen song in the past with Fabrizio Faniello’s “I Do” and I’m doing it again - PROUDLY INDEED.

In the past years we’ve headed to the ESC with some rather remarkable songs including ballads from Chiara and Mary Spiteri as well as pop-pier songs like Ira Losco’s “7th Wonder”.

‘Vodka’ comes off as a poor attempt to dramaticize a few minutes in the life of a spy who possesses VERY poor vocabulary. With the Alexander-Litvinenko-business going on, this song could have been made into something beautiful and meaningful. Unfortunately, the general vibe people are getting is that this song is about their favourite drink for Saturday night.

Morena’s a beautiful woman boasting quite some talent. But the song isn’t strong enough. Quite frankly none of the songs battling out for the MaltaSong for Europe title deserved to bag it this year - half the time I couldn’t tell the songs apart. And never mind the big shows other countries have, those didn’t bag Mary, Chiara or Ira their second place. But all this is besides the point.

The point is that unless we’re willing to start writing some really meaningful stuff that doesn’t make our ears bleed while being sung, we can keep on hoping and failing to win the ESC.

And stop illuding yourself that us Maltese lot slagging off ‘Vodka’ on here is going to effect other participants’ ESC vote. It won’t. ANYONE with half a brain would LISTEN to the song and judge for themselves, without having to depend on any Maltese person’s opinion like a crutch.

Bottom line is, I hope this song will do well for Morena’s sake as a rather talented artist. However, truth is I think it won’t.

Well, I happen to be from Germany and I have never before heard of Morena, but I liked her song and performance the moment I beheld the video.

I think “Vodka” is one of the best ESC-entries in YEARS. It is really hard to see why it is receiving such harsh criticism here; it has got just the right tempo and rhythm for a successful pop song, and a singer with a rich voice to match. Even the Finnish Heavy Metal entry wanes in the wake of “Vodka”’s power.

And ‘horrible lyrics’ ? Too many repetitions of “Vodka” ?
I recall -way back in time - a long forgotten scandinavian group crooning on the place of the demise of some french guy even more way back in time [.. “Elba” or “St. Helens” or something ? ;) ]… you look it up (must have been around 1974) and count the repetions of the one-word song title within the lyrics of that song.

Malta and Morena: I’ll be pulling for YOU during the evening of the event.

ESC 2009 shall be conducted in La Valleta.

Or, in the words used in Guitar Hero : “YOU ROCK”

I just don’t think this is what a song should be about- especially not a Eurovision song.
They should be about something with more meaning and emotion, like love, peace, friendship, well anything but not about stuff like this. It’s probably almost impossible to sing about Vodka with emotion, unless you’re an alcoholic maybe….Well the lyrics should at least have more meaning. I know I have said that I like when countries sing in their native language even if I don’t understand the lyrics but you can hear how much emotion the singer sings with even if you don’t understand the song.
I don’t mind repeating a word “too much”-but the lyrics are not good.

    Posted May 16, 2008 at 8:08 pm | Permalink

Sir, you are certainly aware that the song is not about the drink, alright?

And what is so bad about a song about adventures in espionage, when at the same time there are knights willing to die riding in from Finland, Irish turkeys raving over “douze points” and bogus Argentinians chirping for Spain on whatever matter ?

By your standards, it seems that a significant number of participants get ruled before they even present themselves - did you voice your reservations against those songs likewise ?

Ok, “our” Nicole actually once won the ESC for Germany with “Ein bischen Frieden” … I’ll give you that one.
Only you should have read what was brought up against this winning song about peace AFTER the evening: “a little peace” was not enough for some people! Would you have joined that crowd, too ?

Next week, wce’ll see who of us was right after all, and we’ll have a good drink on that,ok ? ;))

I personally think that a lot of people are making a fuss about a competition that is almost insignificant when considered musically. There are much more important competitions out there of better prestige and where proper music can be played. On the whole I’m not ashamed to say that the song sounded more professional than usual I don’t know why but I’m not really into electronic music so … In Malta we have a lot of talent but we really don’t know how to use it. Taking as an example the band Scar …. It lately had recorded some very good music … I MEAN REALLY GOOD MUSIC. We just have to shift our focus and use Malta’s finances better like make a proper school of music where people can graduate in music instead of wasting money on eurovision. If we continue this way we’re wasting a lot of potentially incredible musicians by not even giving them a fair chance either because of financial impossibility or due to not even being properly exposed to good music. For example I’m an 18 year old that loved music since I was 9. Now I had too major setbacks:
    1. I wasn’t exposed to music at an early since music in Malta is only considered to be worth as a hobby nothing less nothing more.
    2. I don’t have a proper chance to study music in Malta since I want to take it at a professional level along with my other subjects and this discourages me financially since I’m not as well to do as some people seem to be.
    3. Some people say I have a very good potential but as long as the authorities don’t help financially the art of music I’m going to be stuck in the same place just like many other incredible musicians I know. It’s either abandoning academic studies and seek music only which is not that viable or just culture yourself academically and never get anywhere with your talents which we can’t live with either. Am I not spoilt for choice?! *ironic*

I really hope that what I said can sink in cause we’re living in a society which is only benefiting from the tip of the iceberg leaving the remaining 9/10 of the artistic Maltese potential undiscovered. Thanks.
On the whole i wish luck to Morena for future success.

Alas! Things went considerably different for Morena from what I expected, and I am sorry for her and Malta. I still think that Morena’s performance was among the top three of the evening, and certainly the best in terms of going out to the public. I only had a chance to attend the show via Internet on my notebook, hence with a mediocre sound quality, but wasn’t it so that the audience exclamated “Malta” when the hostess asked them just before the last contestant was to be revealed? And to my ears, the audience did it twice, because she didn’t get it the first time. No ?

I think that the song was great, and anyone who did not like the song - what are you even doing here? I see no point in reading lyrics of the song you hate…

    – Go Malta, you have support from Bosnia!

It’s a very special language and I don’t really know what language it’s related to, if it is really related to any language at all.
I’m not even sure if it’s Indo-European, I think it is but I’m not sure..I have to check that out. Some Indo-European doesn’t belong to any branch of it, like Germanic, Romance, Slavic, Baltic etc. examples of this are Albanian and Greek, they are both Indo-European but they have their own branches.
Some languages on the European continent aren’t even Indo-European at all, for example Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Turkish and even more special-linguists aren’t even sure what it comes from-Basque.
But I’m honestly not sure how it is with Maltese..I can’t really see that it should belong to any special branch of the indo-european languages unless it has its own branch or belongs in someway to one of the branches of the Indo-European languages of which many languages are spoken in West Asia (Indo-Aryan languages, Iranian languages etc.) but I’m not sure if it is either….I must really go and check that up.

Actually, Maltese is an Afro-Asian Semitic language….the particularity of this language is that it is written in latin characters (considering that is a Arabic related language), and their latin-related words are token mostly from Sicilian language, but their lyrical structure is more similar to hebrew or arabic, or at least is that i read….but after all, stills sounds quite complex, i wonder if the Malta`s ppl who has english as main or mother language had difficult to learn maltese…

Ah ok, that explains why I didn’t know about it lol. I have to admit I’m not very good with the groups outside the Indo-European languages yet.
But yea, it looks very special and you can easily see that it’s not similar to any other language in Europe.
If it’s hard for native English speakers to learn or not, I have no idea of though. But they are probably very different, English is a Germanic language and Maltese is as you said not even an Indo-European language. Don’t know how its grammatical structure is, but probably it is quite a lot different from English then.
