As usual, there are speculations all around about some 2008 Eurovision songs being copies..

For example, that the part before the chorus of Ani Lorak's Shadi Lady is the same as Mia Stigmi performed at Greek National Final 2003, by Giannis Vardis.

That Morena's Vodka is a copy of I Am A Cider Drinker by The Wurzels and Tony Blackburn (click)

That Lithuanian Nomads in the Night by Jeronimas Milius sounds like a piece from the Phantom of the Opera.. (click)

Swiss entry also didn't escape accusations.. Is Paolo's Era Stupendo a copy of It can only get better performed by Swedish singer Amy Diamond? Here is a video with the two songs combined…

Paolo vs Amy ~ Is Era Stupendo a copy of It Can Only Get Better?

  • Yes and he should be disqualified (32%, 59 Votes)
  • It is just similar (31%, 57 Votes)
  • It’s just a speculation (19%, 36 Votes)
  • There is no similarity (18%, 34 Votes)

Total Voters: 186

There were also a lot of discussions that this year's Romanian song, Pe-o margine de lume is a copy of a song from Spanish National Final 2002 by David Bustamante - La magia del corazon

Are these just something that people invent to make more fuss around Eurovision or because they are unhappy with their country's choice or jealous of another country's entry… What do you think?

And, have you maybe heard of other examples (among 2008 entries)?

I suppose the first one is quite similar but I doubt it's really plagiarised, is that Swedish song even known outside sweden? actually I haven't really heard that song myself either so….

and I don't find the spanish song that similar, except in a few places I suppose.

Doesn't that Amy vs Paolo combination video make you wonder?

Or maybe just the video made the songs sound so similar?

I've read somewhere that her manager Lee Deasismont claimed in Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that the best parts of Era Stupendo were taken from Amy's song and that he said that:

“the song is a clear case of plagiarism. I think the song will be disqualified”

And, btw did you like her Melodifestivalen entry?

Well yea they sound quite similar but not sure….

And nah, I didn't like it so much, it's not the best song she has made but oh well it's ok I suppose. actually she is just 15 like me :P You actually have to be 16 to be in the eurovision but she would have turned 16 before the contest if she had won. The albanian singer this year is only 16 though I think.

Ok now that was off topic….Back on topic….well I suppose they are quite similar.

lol

yes they are! :)

And she does look (and sound) young.. which reminded me - have you seen my post on Eurovision Fun Facts ? The rule that contestants have to be minimum 16 years of age was introduced in 1986 because a 13 year old Sandra Kim won the contest that year. Now I am off topic .. but you can comment there if you want :D

Yea I have seen that post :P Well now there is a junior eurovision too with children from 8 to 15 singing so if they are younger than 16 they can sing there. I have not been following that competition a lot lately though, I think I didn't even see it at all last year. :P I prefer the big one lol

By the way, now I remember this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mn0WAvFh9GQ Some albanians accusing Molitva to be stolen from an Albanian song. :P I suppose a few parts of them are similar but doubt it's a copy….

well… that would just be silly if you ask me!

:D

I guess it's quite logical that songs remind us of other songs… Also, very rarely a song composed nowadays sticks in our minds and stays there.

I will have to investigate this plagiarism thing to see if any of the accusations were ever proven to have anything to do with the reality :)

Yea well there are many many songs in the world and I suppose it's hard to make one not sounding a little similar to any other song. as long as it's not a very very long part of the song that is the same as another….then it should be suspected for plagiarism I guess.
