Pritegnu me teret tuge,
nad tobom sam mor’o da se nagnem,
rukom da se taknem
tvoje ruke;
al’ ti se svetiš, svete moj,
pretrnu mi ruka u tvojoj,
i da kaje svoje grehe
u tvojojzi nestade je,
nikad više
vitim perom da zapiše,
da se maši za mač britak –
nikad – nikad! –

Oprosti mi! oprosti mi oku mome,
oku mome željanome,
što ti upi sunce, tvoje lice,
al’ to lice, osvetnice,
sažeglo mi oba oka,
da ne vidim ništa
od neba visoka
do pusta zemljišta –

oprosti mi reči u milosti,
što te moli
da mi vratiš što me boli,

Forgive Me

Forgive me…
Forgive me!
The weight of grief has pulled me in,
Over you I had to lean,
to feel your hand
with mine;
but you are vindictive, my world,
my hand froze up in yours,
and to repent its sins
it vanished in yours,
never again
to write with a thin quill,
to reach for a sharp sword –
never – never! –

Forgive me! forgive my eye,
my hungry eye,
for absorbing your sunshine, your face,
but that face, revenger,
has burnt out both of my eyes,
so I can’t see a thing
from the sky above
to the wasteland –
nothing – nothing! –

Forgive me! Oh, forgive!
forgive me for the words in grace,
that begs you
to give me back what hurts me,
to give me back my hand,
to give me back my eyes,
not to be in the dark while there’s sun,
not to suffer while there’s a balm;
a sea of blood goes up my lips,
