Desanka Maksimović – Bez sagovornika

Pesma

Bez sagovornika

Razgovaram bez sagovornika
kao da razgovaram s duhom,
ne vidim mu razgovetno lika,
čujem ga više srcem nego sluhom.

Nema čuđenja, nema nesporazuma,
razgovaramo kao vekovni znanci,
otvaram širom vrata uma,
reči iz podsvesti idu pravce.

Govori mi što nikada inače
neće mi reći ako se sretnemo.
Znam šta mu i polureči… znače.
Razgovaramo sad naglas, sada nemo.

Pričini mi se da razgovor teče
u dalekom predelu, visokoj travi,
nekad u svanuće, nekada uveče –
sve je nestvarno, a kao na javi.

To biva kada se u meni nagomila
mnogo prećutnog, u samoći.
Razgovaramo kao što razgovaraju oči,
kao što razgovaraju dva bila.

English Translation

Without A Collocutor

I’m conversing without a collocutor
as if I’m talking with a ghost,
I don’t see his face clearly,
I hear him more with my heart than with hearing.

No surprises, no misunderstandings,
we’re talking like we’ve known eachother for centuries,
I’m opening widely the door of reason,
the words are coming straight out of the subconscious.

Telling me things that would otherwise
Never tell, should we meet.
I even know what his half-words… mean.
We’re talking one moment out loud, the other silently.

I had a feeling that the conversation was flowing
In a distant place, in a tall grass,
Sometimes at dawn, sometimes in the evening –
Everything is unreal, but seems real to me.

That’s what happens when, in solitude,
a lot of silence, builds up within me.
We’re talking the way that eyes talk,
The way that two pulses talk.

  1. Hm… You are right but…
What the poet actually says is
That’s what happens when, inside me, a lot of “unsaid” builds up (in loneliness).
So, perhaps that does lead us to a more appropriate translation … 🙂

  2. In the last stanza, I think it would be better like this – silent is an adjective, silence is a noun – it is better grammar.
That’s what happens when, in solitude,
a lot of silence builds up within me.
We’re talking the way that eyes talk,
The way that two pulses talk.
