Lyrics and Video:

English Translation
And If It Had To Be Done

If it had to be done, I would stop the earth
I would turn off the light so that you stay asleep
If it had to be done to please you, raising opposite winds
In a desert without life, I would find the sea

And if it had to be done, I would stop the rain
It will turn around the rest of our lives
If it had to be done to please you, listening to you every night
When you speak of love, I would speak of it too

So you still look into the depth of my eyes
So you still see in there the biggest of the big fires
And so your hand clings to my skin where it wants to
If you fly away one day, I would follow if I could

And if it had to be done, I would repel the winter
With hard blows of springtime and long clear mornings
If it had to be done to please you, I would stop the time
So all your words of yesterday stay with me now

So I still look into the blue of your eyes
So your two hands still get lost in my hair
I will make everything bigger and if it’s too much or too little
I would be wrong all the time, if that’s what you want

I do want to give everything, if only you believe in it
My heart does want to bleed, if only you see it
Until being nothing more but the shadow of your nights
Until being nothing more but a shadow that follows you

And if it had to be done

  1. I admired such a wonderful taste! The face, the song, the music, the body, the make-up, the clothes, everything was outstanding!!! It’s about a very sensual woman who sacrifies everything for her love and passion. Are there really people who think this is boring? Just because it does not contain a boring boom boom disco sound? Patricia Kaas found a new fan in me: I adore the song, admire her voice and love her! Marie Jeanne.

  2. i dont know what to say but i couldnt understand the lyric but i dont know i feel the lyric its amazing it took me from the world….

  3. i think it’s a great song
when i heared it at the first time i couldent
    stop to listen.
although i didn’t understand the lyrics
i just break up and now after i read the lyrics for the first
time it’s amazing, it’s just right the way i feel

  4. This contest just wasn’t the right place for her. I love the contest, but still it’s just a circus. And she was there ,surrounded by clowns, the only one, unique and perfect. Just did her job, just sang and left, no masquerade, just pure ART.
Ever lasting thanks to her for what she is doing.

  5. This song is amazing! Its lyrics are wonderful, its music is like a classic “chanson” (it will be a classic though) and silky voice of Patricia Kaas, of course. I agree that this is a depressive song but I like that kind of songs. 🙂

(Especially the part after 2:15, beginning with the line “je veux bien tout donner” is very very good!)

Eventually I think it was the BEST song in ESC 2009 along with UK’s song but they were too classy for such a competition.

Norway’s song was a typical Eurovision song and a good one, so I think they deserved to win.

    Greetings from Istanbul, Turkey.

  6. This was by far the best song of ESC 2009, really deep and touching. The music doesn’t need any kind of show-off, very amazing… But unfortunately, people are always searching for something spectacular, the more effects the better. What a pity.

  7. you’ve just lack of delightness. This song should’ve won, but political support… no one can say this song sucks, as it is the best one ever and Patricia, ever the most splendidly singing…

  8. My turco-german opinion: Fantastic song, fantastic voice, fantastic lyrics, fantastic singer. Pure quality. I love it.

  9. do not listen to stathis… your song is quite good but you are coldass!!! You generaly suck!!! you shoud be more polite with other people… you could be first but your attitude sucks!!! kisses…

  10. I like this song and I’m not even French but my best friend is. Still is New York could vote it would get 8 points.

  11. The song is unfortunately not for everybody, because not everybody can understand its deep meaning. It is not depressive or boring! It is very beautiful. It’s Patricia Kaas style, unique and wonderful.

  12. I think this is the best song of ESC 2009! I never agree the people who find it boring. the music is perfect, so emotional, also lyrics. good luck Patricia Kaas.

  13. Well, discussions like this are normally not my kind of thing, but let’s give it a try 😉
To admit, I’m a fan of Patricia Kaas, and I was especially surprised by her recent album. I always had the idea of taking classic cabaret music back into the present, and I think Patricia did an enormously good job. It’s entertainment from the old days, which I think has to be considered by judging the recording. I like the simple and plain structure of the song, the slight dramatic touch towards the middle and the end. Combined with the smokey touch of Patricia’s voice is just a delight.
It’s not everybody’s kind of music, no doubt about that. But those who can enjoy it, I think will love it, just as I do. I wish her good luck in the competition, she definitely has my vote.

  14. Ok. 🙂 Then we don’t agree on this one, because I think it’s REALLY boring. 🙂

But now that I think about it, I think Patricia Kaas always sounds suicidal! 😀 Ok, I admit that I don’t know that many of her songs, but this is true of the ones I know. 🙂

  15. Hm… about this.. I don’t think it’s boring… It’s a good song but extremely depressing… She sounds very suicidal and absolutely not like she would have the energy to do any of the stuff she says she would do “to please him”

  16. I love it, it’s a wonderfull song, so eleqant… it remains me to Edith Piaf….it’s absollutelly beautiful…. even don’t won the song’s contest is the best song

  17. I usually like ballads, but somehow I find this a bit..boring or something. French is a beautiful language good for ballads, but this one..nah I don’t know. Good lyrics though.
