Vodka
Malta 2008 Eurovision Song
(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)
(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey)
The hunt is still on
Here in Gorky Park
I’m in a danger zone
Everywhere is pitch dark
I’m running away
To a blanket of snow
Spy One to Spy Four
I’ve deciphered the code, yeah…
Vodka – that’s the secret word
Vodka – and they want it so bad
Vodka – I’ve deciphered the code
Got a rush in the head
Vodka – a transparent word
(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)
(Na zdarovye!)
(Hey hey hey hey hey)
Cold blood drums within
They breathe down my neck
Spy One to Spy Four
We just have to connect
Their footsteps are near
Closing in for the kill
My pulse has gone dead
With a heart-racing chill, yeah…
Vodka – that’s the secret word
Vodka – and they want it so bad, so bad, so bad
Vodka – I’ve deciphered the code
Got a rush in the head, yeah…
Vodka – a transparent word…
(Vodka – that’s the secret word)
(Na zdarovye!) Yeah…
(Vodka – and they want it so bad) So bad, yeah
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)
Vodka, yeah… (That’s the secret word)
(Na zdarovye!)
Vodka – a transparent word
(Hey hey hey hey hey hey)
*Na zdarovye! = Russian for cheers
Lyrics for all Maltese Eurosongs

Sorry i get carried away i meant 3 major setbacks
I personally think that a lot of people are making a fuss about a competition that is almost insignificant when considered musically. There are much more important competitions out there of better prestige and where proper music can be played. On the whole I’m not ashamed to say that the song sounded more professional than usual I don’t know why but I’m not really into electronic music so … In Malta we have a lot of talent but we really don’t know how to use it. Taking as an example the band Scar …. It lately had recorded some very good music … I MEAN REALLY GOOD MUSIC. We just have to shift our focus and use Malta’s finances better like make a proper school of music where people can graduate in music instead of wasting money on eurovision. If we continue this way we’re wasting a lot of potentially incredible musicians by not even giving them a fair chance either because of financial impossibility or due to not even being properly exposed to good music. For example I’m an 18 year old that loved music since I was 9. Now I had too major setbacks:
1. I wasn’t exposed to music at an early since music in Malta is only considered to be worth as a hobby nothing less nothing more.
2. I don’t have a proper chance to study music in Malta since I want to take it at a professional level along with my other subjects and this discourages me financially since I’m not as well to do as some people seem to be.
3. Some people say I have a very good potential but as long as the authorities don’t help financially the art of music I’m going to be stuck in the same place just like many other incredible musicians I know. It’s either abandoning academic studies and seek music only which is not that viable or just culture yourself academically and never get anywhere with your talents which we can’t live with either. Am I not spoilt for choice?! *ironic*
I really hope that what I said can sink in cause we’re living in a society which is only benefiting from the tip of the iceberg leaving the remaining 9/10 of the artistic Maltese potential undiscovered. Thanks.
On the whole i wish luck to Morena for future success.
Well she still woke me up! And I’m sorry for Malta…
let me quote something that stood in a swedish newspaper about this song (not literally but almost). It said something like that this song made you want to go and get a bottle of the drink to not have to hear this 😛

dirk- have I ever said I liked Finland’s, Spain’s or Ireland’s songs? I don’t like them.
and I don’t think I was born when that German song won lol cause I’m born 1992.
Well everyone has different tastes and opinions and I respect yours. We’ll see what song will win.

Sir, you are certainly aware that the song is not about the drink, alright?
And what is so bad about a song about adventures in espionage, when at the same time there are knights willing to die riding in from Finland, Irish turkeys raving over “douze points” and bogus Argentinians chirping for Spain on whatever matter ?
By your standards, it seems that a significant number of participants get ruled before they even present themselves – did you voice your reservations against those songs likewise ?
Ok, “our” Nicole actually once won the ESC for Germany with “Ein bischen Frieden” … I’ll give you that one.
Only you should have read what was brought up against this winning song about peace AFTER the evening: “a little peace” was not enough for some people! Would you have joined that crowd, too ?
Next week, wce’ll see who of us was right after all, and we’ll have a good drink on that,ok ? ;))
I just don’t think this is what a song should be about- especially not a Eurovision song.
They should be about something with more meaning and emotion, like love, peace, friendship, well anything but not about stuff like this. It’s probably almost impossible to sing about Vodka with emotion, unless you’re an alcoholic maybe….Well the lyrics should at least have more meaning. I know I have said that I like when countries sing in their native language even if I don’t understand the lyrics but you can hear how much emotion the singer sings with even if you don’t understand the song.
I don’t mind repeating a word “too much”-but the lyrics are not good.
Well, I happen to be from Germany and I have never before heard of Morena, but I liked her song and performance the moment I beheld the video.
I think “Vodka” is one of the best ESC-entries in YEARS. It is really hard to see why it is receiving such harsh criticism here; it has got just the right tempo and rhythm for a successful pop song, and a singer with a rich voice to match. Even the Finnish Heavy Metal entry wanes in the wake of “Vodka”‘s power.
And ‘horrible lyrics’ ? Too many repetitions of “Vodka” ?
I recall -way back in time – a long forgotten scandinavian group crooning on the place of the demise of some french guy even more way back in time [.. “Elba” or “St. Helens” or something ? 😉 ]… you look it up (must have been around 1974) and count the repetions of the one-word song title within the lyrics of that song.
Malta and Morena: I’ll be pulling for YOU during the evening of the event.
ESC 2009 shall be conducted in La Valleta.
Or, in the words used in Guitar Hero : “YOU ROCK”
Hey..wishing all the best to Morena and Malta. 😀 Amy

cool song… 😀 funny. #1
I’m ‘lolling’ at all the people jumping on the SUPPORT-OUR-MALTESE-PRODUCT-BANDWAGON. No kids, if something is terrible, it’s just plain terrible regardless of whether it’s Made in Malta, China or the US of A. I will not support anything that makes AN ASS out of my country. I’ve opted out of supporting Malta’s chosen song in the past with Fabrizio Faniello’s “I Do” and I’m doing it again – PROUDLY INDEED.
In the past years we’ve headed to the ESC with some rather remarkable songs including ballads from Chiara and Mary Spiteri as well as pop-pier songs like Ira Losco’s “7th Wonder”.
‘Vodka’ comes off as a poor attempt to dramaticize a few minutes in the life of a spy who possesses VERY poor vocabulary. With the Alexander-Litvinenko-business going on, this song could have been made into something beautiful and meaningful. Unfortunately, the general vibe people are getting is that this song is about their favourite drink for Saturday night.
Morena’s a beautiful woman boasting quite some talent. But the song isn’t strong enough. Quite frankly none of the songs battling out for the MaltaSong for Europe title deserved to bag it this year – half the time I couldn’t tell the songs apart. And never mind the big shows other countries have, those didn’t bag Mary, Chiara or Ira their second place. But all this is besides the point.
The point is that unless we’re willing to start writing some really meaningful stuff that doesn’t make our ears bleed while being sung, we can keep on hoping and failing to win the ESC.
And stop illuding yourself that us Maltese lot slagging off ‘Vodka’ on here is going to effect other participants’ ESC vote. It won’t. ANYONE with half a brain would LISTEN to the song and judge for themselves, without having to depend on any Maltese person’s opinion like a crutch.
Bottom line is, I hope this song will do well for Morena’s sake as a rather talented artist. However, truth is I think it won’t.
In my opinion this song has a catchy tune which should help us regain our position amongst the top Eurovision Song Contest partecipants. I do not agree with all those who are critisizing the song and the singer. We obviously take the contest too much at heart but is because we really care about our country so let usunite once more and back Morena & Vodka. Having listened to some other competitor’s songs I think Morena should pass the semi-final hurdle and place amongst the top 10, but then it is up to the other countries to decide. Pity that a Maltese living abroad decided not to vote. How patriotic !!!
Exactly what I thought.. that Russia might rank it highly because of the essential drink! 🙂
I am from Russia and I didn`t like this song at all. The lyrics are total terrible. But I think the russian audience will give many points for this trash because of the phrase in Russian “На здоровье (Na zdarovye)” and of the great importance which this drink has in our country. 🙂
This year I am not in Malta to witness the Maltese European Fever … And I am not missing it at all.
As usual we will take te whole thing so seriously and think Malta is going to win … Then we place badly and we blame the may the thing is voted for … So why take it seriously in the first place.
Froman objective point of view (as I am not residing in the island at the moment), I agree with MikielSammut completely ! This song is complete rubbish – Possibliu ma kellkomx ahjar minn xiex taghzlu ghax kwazi ghar minn ta Faniello din!
Nahseb lanqas nindenja nivvota lill Malta avolja nista issa !
Morena, Jien ma naqbilx li ha noqoghdu nitghajjru u se noqodu nsibu d-difetti tad-diska. Heqq, dik hija d-diska li ntaghzlet u b’dik se mmorru. Jiena nawgura lil Morena li taghmel il-performance taghha mill-ahjar u ngibu punti kemm nistghu. F’Morena, laqatni hafna l-attitudni li ghandha fuq l-istage ghax bil-mod kif tagixxi iggieghel lil min ikun qed jaraha u jismaghha jidhol fl-atmosfera u b’hekk taghti pjacir.
Good luck minn qalbna u zomm soda!!!!
To be Maltese you do not need to be rude… to write in Maltese you must know how to… allura iktbu l-Malti sewwa!!!!
ara mikiel pufta l ewwel nies int malti allura tkellem bil malti u din id diska hija wahada mil l isbah li intazlet al euro vision
